Dramatist J M Barrie (1860-1937) was born into a large Scottish family on May 9, 1860. He attended Edinburgh University, earning a Master of Arts degree in 1882.
.....Although he had other successes as a writer, Peter Pan was his most famous work. The play was first performed in 1904, and the book was published in 1928.
.....During his Switzerland honeymoon in 1894 with new bride and stage actress Mary Ansell, Barrie got a St. Bernard puppy. The dog would later be the inspiration behind Nana, the beloved "nursemaid" in the play.
.....Barrie must have also received a tremendous amount of inspiration from his time spent telling stories to the five young sons of a family friend. He and Mary never had children of their own.
.....In 1913, Barrie was knighted, and also became rector of St. Andrew's University. Another well-known work of his was a speech delivered that same year at St. Andrew's, entitled Courage.
.....Just prior to his death in 1937, Barrie asked that any royalties earned from Peter Pan be passed on, in perpetuity, to the Great Ormond Street Hospital for Sick Children in London, England.
